For years I have been greatly benefited by the testimonies in the Sentinel and still have withheld my own experience of the "firstfruits," which were wonderful to me. After years of ill health and after an operation that seemed inevitable, in the depths of despair I prayed to God that I might die, as death would be preferable to a life of continued pain. But the thought came, Why not go to a Christian Science service? I arose from my couch and went to inquire when the next meeting would be held, which was the following day. It was a testimony meeting, with just a few in attendance, and the thing that impressed me most was the sincere gratitude for such small demonstrations.
A copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was lent to me for a few days. Before opening the book to read it, I reasoned that I had tried almost every human way but to no avail, and now I was willing to become "as a little child," as the Bible says one must do in order to find the kingdom of heaven. I resolved to pass over and not to criticize what I did not understand, and let God show me what I needed to know. I read for hours at a time, for the pages were illumined. God became so very near to me that I thought of little else. The thought of physical healing did not occur to me. I realized that I was finding "a new heaven and a new earth;" I was actually living in it. Passages from the Bible which before I had not understood were revealed in their true meaning and I became aware of the fact that I was healed. My gratitude to Mrs. Eddy was greater than words can express, for I knew that the same healing is for all mankind. I am grateful for all that Mrs. Eddy has given to us, for every branch of the work.—(Mrs.) Sara B. Brown, Palo Alto, California.
