In Science and Health we read: "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more" (p. 3). The writer had been a great sufferer for fourteen years and had exhausted all known medical skill, but a few weeks' treatment in Christian Science brought the realization that he had been healed of a painful stomach disorder, also of sleeplessness.
After the first good night of refreshing sleep, I said to the practitioner the next morning that I wanted to give up business and go out through the country to help the suffering. The practitioner then kindly explained that it would be much better for me to remain at my work until I gained more of this truth, meanwhile letting my light shine, and that if I were "lifted up" through the study, I would be able to help others. Acting upon this advice, I began earnestly to study the Bible and the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and have never ceased to do so since. Having procured a Quarterly, I started to study the Lesson-Sermons, and I also subscribed for and read all the literature. In reading the Bible for the first time, I saw a passage from the gospels wherein we are told that after the master Christian had healed a man, the one healed asked permission to follow him. The Master's reply was, "Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee." Immediately upon reading this I thought of the wisdom of the practitioner; for if I had given up business and gone into different cities to try to help my fellow men, it is very likely they would not have believed that I had been healed through Christian Science.
By studying earnestly, and gaining a little understanding of the truth which the Master said would make us free, I have been able to help several of my employees, and they are now subscribing for the literature regularly. It was easy for them to believe, for they knew that for years I had been seeking to regain my health through materia medica, change of climate, and hygienic treatment; also that I had dropped all this and had been healed through Christian Science.
