Among the Churches

Current Notes

Halifax, England.—First Church of Christ, Scientist, has just completed negotiations for the purchase of the property known as "Savile Lodge," situated at the corner of Savile road and Well Head lane. At present only slight structural alterations will be made to the building, but later it is the intention of the members of First Church to erect a church edifice suitable for their needs. The progress of the cause of Christian Science in this district has rendered necessary the acquisition of this property.

Portland, Ore.—On Jan. 1, 1914, the union extension committee, consisting of three members from each of the five Christian Science churches of Portland, began the second year of its work of holding services in the jails of the city and suburbs. The first year had been rich in experiences for the committee, with many healings reported among the prisoners. During this last year the studied methods of appealing to human sympathy, which are so sub£le, were met with a greater wisdom than ever before, both by the committee and by those asked to attend the services. The continued requests of the prisoners for the committee to intercede for them and get them out of what they tried to make us believe was unjust confinement, have about ceased, as the men begin to realize what the help which we come to give them really is,—the awakening of the Christ in human consciousness, to change their thoughts from hatred to love.
