My attention has just been called to Doctor—'s reference...
Biddeford (Maine) Journal
My attention has just been called to Doctor—'s reference to Christian Science as reported in a recent issue. Without questioning his motive for condemning on a wholesale plan very nearly everything in the universe excepting his own particular doctrine of salvation, it might not be impertinent to inquire why he should waste time referring to other religions which he considers false, for in the words of a wise counselor of olden time, one Gamaliel by name, "Now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God."
Christian Science is today taught and practised in every civilized country in the world, as well as in some of the lands which Doctor—says refuse to accept Christianity until they are convinced that the Bible is true. Christian Science is proving that the Bible is true by doing the works Jesus said would follow the practice of his teaching. "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Thus spoke the Master, and that Christian Science is accomplishing these works in a satisfying degree is attested by hundreds of thousands from all over the world.
If it is a "waste of time" to heal the sick, reform the sinner, bind up the broken-hearted, and bring health and happiness where sin, sickness, and misery existed, then Christian Scientists must plead guilty. If our reverend critic is endeavoring to spread the gospel, we shall wish him Godspeed in whatever good he may do and trust he will learn to be more spearing in his condemnation of those who may be doing as great a work, even though they may be more humble and less spectacular in their methods than he.
