From early childhood I suffered almost constantly from one disease or another and lived in fear. I was afraid to eat, even afraid to talk for fear of saying something I should not. While quite young I was obliged to earn my own living. I would work for a while and then have to stop for days, sometimes weeks, on account of ill health.

In January, 1906, I went to work in a small town and was directed to a Christian Science family, where I found board and room. This was the first time I had ever heard of Christian Science, and I learned while there what it would do for those who faithfully studied and practised its teachings. The mother had been an invalid and was healed. I watched very closely this mother and her three daughters, and every attack of disease and discord was overcome through their understanding of God and man as given in the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.

I was married in October, and when I went to my new home I took with me an old copy of Science and Health. I found my husband to be what is called a periodic drinker, and he started drinking the day we were married. He told me he had tried in every way to stop and would be thankful if he could, and I believed him and promised to help him. Then I started to read Science and Health and the Bible, and for three months sought to find in them, if possible, a way to help my husband. Discouragement crept in, however, though I still clung to the thought that some day he would be free through God's help.
