In January, 1911, I became ill with influenza, and according to medical diagnosis just escaped acute lung trouble. After apparent recovery I pursued my customary vocation until the following spring, but did not regain the flesh I had lost or my normal strength. I was then stricken with a nervous breakdown, suffering all the physical and mental distress which accompanies this condition, including sleeplessness, loss of appetite, and a derangement of every function of the body. All that will-power, the kindly doctor, medicine, loving friends, and change of scene could do to relieve me was done, but with only temporary relief. After remaining in the mountains for about four months and a half, I returned home somewhat improved, but soon relapsed into a condition fully as bad as before.
I realized that material means did not bring a permanent cure, and so, knowing that God as understood and revealed by Christian Science had healed those who had accepted it, and being advised and encouraged to try it by one who had experienced its healing power, I did so, after some hesitancy. I had been for a number of years a churchman, a student as well as a teacher of the Bible, loving its teachings and meeting with some success. God, however, overruled my hesitancy and led me to a practitioner, who gladly responded to my needs. In seven days, to the joy of myself and family, I was able to attend to my duties with health and comfort.
Friends who did not understand Christian Science, adivsed me not to take up my past vocation, predicting that I would soon have to give it up; but the practitioner told me to take up any work that I desired to do, and to go back to the former position if it was still open to me. This I did, and during the busiest season. Nevertheless I steadily gained flesh, so that in a short time my weight exceeded that previous to my sickness.
