St. Paul says, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ...
St. Paul says, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Christian Science has enabled me to prove the truth of these words. It is now eight years since I began to study Science and Health. At that time I was very delicate and a great sufferer from rheumatism, the pain at times being so acute that I had to have hypodermic injections. I tried baths, electricity, massage, and every material remedy, but nothing gave me any permanent relief. After a very severe course of treatment in California, I saw a specialist in London, who told me my heart was so weak that it was not safe for me to try any more of these remedies, and advised me to make up my mind to bear the rheumatism, as there was really no cure for it. Shortly after this I bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I was deeply interested, and absolutely convinced of the truth of its teaching, and after about three months' study of the book I was healed of the rheumatism.
About a year before coming into Christian Science I had also suffered from an internal complaint, and after a consultation with two specialists in London I was advised to undergo an operation, to which I consented; but when under the anesthetic it was found impossible to proceed, as the condition was too bad. Therefore instructions were given for me to be kept on a very low diet, just enough to keep me alive. After three months of this diet and rigorous medical treatment, I was pronounced well, but at the same time the doctor informed me that I would always be liable to a return of the trouble, when a repetition of the course I have described would have to be resorted to.
The illness did return, but at the time I was staying with a Christian Science practitioner, and although considerably alarmed by the recollection of the doctor's forebodings, especially regarding food, I decided to rely entirely upon Christian Science. The practitioner told me that the medical law of prohibition in regard to certain articles of food must be broken, and that I was free to take whatsoever I desired. The way in which this was spoken conveyed such understanding of the powerlessness of any asserted law but the law of God, that my fear was there and then destroyed, and I have never been troubled with any such conditions since. I eat anything without the slightest fear.
