Darkness Dispelled

On one occasion I was sitting in a large hall, awaiting the opening of a meeting. All that morning my consciousness had been full of discord, fear, and discouragement over difficulty with my school lessons. I had forgotten the Father's help. As I sat thus, my attention was attracted by a dingy black spot on the ceiling. It seemed strange to me that such an ugly spot had not been removed from an otherwise immaculate ceiling, but the solution came directly when the sun's rays burst into the room and the black spot vanished. This sudden disappearance of darkness at the presence of light impressed me strongly. No one could have rubbed that dark spot out, no matter how long he might have tried. Only at the presence of light would it disappear, showing clearly that it never possessed entity or reality.

With this experience I appreciated the full significance of a statement by Mrs. Eddy which I had previously read: "Truth is the light which dispels error. As mortals begin to understand Spirit, they give up the belief that there is any true existence apart from God" (Science and Health, p. 282). It also recalled the words of St. John, "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." With this clear thought of Truth, the former fear and discouragement disappeared instantaneously, and in their place were gladness and hope. After this the school lessons were taken up with fresh courage and with deep gratitude, for the loving Father's help was no longer forgotten. A greater watchfulness to turn the light of Truth on every seemingly dark experience was the result of that lesson on the power of light to dispel darkness.
