Chicago churchmen were divided regarding the findings of the London commission of prominent clergymen and leading physicians relative to the problem of spiritual healing. The commission's conclusion that "faith or spiritual healing can be permanently effective only in functional disorders as distinguished from organic diseases," found support in some quarters. The commission was appointed in October, 1911, by the conference of the clerical and medical professions, but the report was not completed and made public until recently. In response to a request for an opinion, the Chicago Christian Science committee on publication made the following statement: —
"You ask for an expression regarding the report of a commission of English clergymen and physicians to the effect that 'faith or spiritual healing can be permanently effective only in functional disorders as distinguished from organic disorders,' etc. It is not stated specifically that Christian Science treatment is included in this sweeping assertion of the learned gentlemen. Assuming, however, that the term 'spiritual healing' is intended to cover Christian Science practice, the answer to the denial that it can heal organic diseases is very simple and very short. It consists in a statement of the fact that Christian Science treatment has healed persons in great numbers who were afflicted with what is termed organic disease.
"I have on my desk affidavits of those who have been healed by Christian Science of so-called organic diseases, so diagnosed by one or more reputable physicians. Through the Christian Science periodicals and in the Wednesday evening meetings in Christian Science churches, testimony of thoroughly reliable persons is constantly being given to the fact that they have been healed of organic disease previously diagnosed as such by physicians. These testimonies can be verified by any one who is sufficiently interested to make the necessary inquiries. So much for the facts with regard to Christian Science healing.
