My heart goes out to God in gratitude impossible to...

My heart goes out to God in gratitude impossible to express in words as I recall some of the many blessings which have come into my life through even my very limited knowledge of Christian Science. Prior to gaining an understanding of this great truth, many years of my life had been spent in the medical field as a trained nurse. I graduated, years ago, from one of New York's large hospitals, and served long and earnestly in my capacity as nurse; but not until I learned through the study of Christian Science some of the fundamental and wonderfully beautiful truths of its teachings, did I realize the source of all true healing. I found few of the splendid, intellectual men and women of the medical profession other than sincere in their beliefs, but I now realize that theirs, like mine, was a misplaced confidence.

A very convincing evidence of this fact was presented to me soon after I became interested in the study of Christian Science. My brother's child at the age of eighteen months became ill, stricken with a fever. Later he developed marked symptoms of Bright's disease in complication with a very high temperature. On the eighth day, the physician in charge considered the illness so critical that he felt it his duty to inform the parents that no hope could possibly be entertained of the child's recovery. My brother had no knowledge of Christian Science, but becoming alarmed, he urged me to come to him, saying he felt sure that if I could do so his baby would be helped. I did go, and although the journey required fourteen hours by rail, the time was utilized in striving to gain a clear sense of the omnipotence and omnipresence of an infinite God who is Love, and whose marvelous compassion for His children never fails to manifest itself when we turn to Him.

Arriving at my brother's house, I found the family in a state of despair and the baby to all sense desperately ill; but I realized, even then, the falsity of the sense testimony, and I think perhaps as never before the significance of the Scriptural assurance that God's hand "is not shortened, that it cannot save." The physician, whose attitude toward Christian Science seemed kind, frankly admitted that he knew nothing of its teachings, but he continued his visits. There was no excitement, but an impersonal declaration of the allness of the power and presence of God, together with an intuition born of spiritual understanding, proved that God was with us. Within three hours a change for the better had taken place, and within three days every vestige of fever had left the child and every symptom of the kidney disease had disappeared. On the fourth day it was my privilege to hear this same physician say to the mother, "The baby is all right; take him out for a drive." This healing took place in the summer of 1909, and since that time the child has been better health, so his father writes, than ever before.
