It is surprising that men who assume to stand as leaders of thought, especially in a religious line, should wilfully indulge in such reckless statements with reference to a religious movement, as those credited to a recent critic in your paper in relation to Christian Science. Christianity is founded upon the teachings of Jesus the Christ, and his teachings were a statement of his clear understanding of the Scriptures and the relation of God to man. Christian Science is based absolutely upon the teachings of Christ Jesus and the Bible, and follows them to an extent to which other Christian churches have refused to go. It insists that when the Master said, "Preach the gospel," "Heal the sick," he laid upon his followers the necessity for obeying the last command as well as the first.

The Master offered as the evidence of the truth of his teachings, signs, which he emphasized as the tokens of faith in those who claimed to believe in him. He said "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." In the realization and application of the teachings of Christian Science this prophecy of the Master is confirmed. It is difficult to understand how absolute adherence to the teachings of the Master and the Scriptures can be termed erroneous. Christian Science is being demonstrated by a class of men and women who are the peers, mentally, intellectually, and spiritually, of any men and women that may be referred to. We do not point to these individuals as necessarily an evidence of the truth of Christian Science, but when comparisons are made it is well to bear in mind the fact that no religious organization contains within its midst men and women superior in all qualifications to those that can be found in large numbers in the Christian Science denomination.

It is easy to make reckless and extravagant statements which it is hoped will be accepted as the mere opinion of the person making them, but that method of argument is not new or original. The Master was accused of performing his wonderful works through the power of the devil, and the argument of entrenched theology has always been of similar import when applied to his followers. But mere words cannot destroy the effect of demonstration, and while those who criticize, condemn, or ridicule Christian Science, limit their proof to the mere unsubstantiated statement, Christian Science is pursuing its very progressive course, healing the sick, saving inners, and bringing to the lives of thousands upon thousands the present evidence of the realization of "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."
