Bloomington (Ill.) Bulletin
In a sermon against Christian Science reported in a recent issue the gentleman proves himself to be many years behind the times by standing on ground long abandoned by most critics as untenable. Our critic wisely says, "There are great and important truths in Christian Science, but they were known and practised long before Mrs. Eddy." They were known and practised by Christ Jesus, by his disciples, and, according to the historian Gibbon, by the members of the early Christian church for centuries after the ascension. Mrs. Eddy, who rediscovered in the nineteenth century the Science of Christianity which began to be lost sight of about the beginning of the third century, has, through her discovery and the work subsequently done by her, reestablished primitive Christianity. She never claimed to have added anything to what Jesus knew and practised, but merely to have restored the lost element of Christian healing.
Christian Scientists are neither trying to "fool all the people some of the time," nor "some of the people all the time," but they are trying by their lives to show that they have found a practical, demonstrable Science of being. This Science is not only making them healthier, happier, and better morally, but is teaching them that the truth which Jesus taught is for "all the people all the time," and will uplift and regenerate every individual in proportion as it is understood and demonstrated.
To cite real or alleged failures of Christian Scientists to heal, is not to disprove the truth of Christian Science. This effort is as futile as would be the attempt to discredit the science of mathematics by citing failures of students to apply the rules of arithmetic correctly. Christian Scientists do not claim that they never fail in their application of Christian Science to the various problems encountered in human experience. They are grateful that they are able to succeed in so large a measure as they do, and look forward to the time when the Science of Christianity will be understood and perfectly demonstrated.
