My first impression of Christian Science was that it is...
My first impression of Christian Science was that it is the same kind of religion as other orthodox churches had, and I had no confidence in it, as I was virtually an infidel. I had no use for any of the different churches, their beliefs, or the God they worshiped, as they all seemed to me to be bowing to something they knew not what. Yet in all these years I had been a seeker for the right kind of religion, a religion from which I might have some good without having to die to get it.
In an out-of-the-way place, among the roughest of men, I met some people whom I found to be Christian Scientists, and upon closer acquaintance they seemed quite different from other religiously inclined people. The first paper which I read on Christian Science was a Sentinel, and I thought such things as were mentioned therein were worth investigating. I soon discovered that there was something about Christian Science which was different from any religion I had ever known before. A friend who also became acquainted with these Scientists, had been afflicted with a severe cough for twenty years. He took treatment and was cured—cured in such short time that it was astonishing; I could scarcely believe it. I watched different cases which presented themselves, and came to the conclusion that there must be something more in Christian Science than blind belief.
Shortly after that time I became so afflicted with frostbitten feet that I could hardly walk, and I suffered greatly, so I thought I would try Christian Science treatment. I did so, and in a few days I was cured and have not suffered with the ailment since. I also was a habitual smoker, having used the weed from childhood up, and I fairly worshiped my pipe. I believed I could never quit smoking, but after a while I decided I would take treatment for the habit. I did so, and I am cured, as it has been over three years that I have had no desire for tobacco in any form.
