A good many years have passed since for the first time I experienced healing in Christian Science, and since then I have had many demonstrations of the power of God to heal the sick and to destroy sin. Ever since I can remember I loved the Bible and its promises, believed sincerely in prayer, and that a just and loving God did exist. A great sense of love and good would come with the study of the Scriptures, but I wondered why I could not be healed of physical ailments through prayer, and help others in the same way, when Jesus had said: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." I prayed more earnestly to be shown the way, to be given more faith and understanding of divine Truth, and in 1900, after what seemed long years of suffering, without relief from pain for more than a few hours at a time, I was given a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy to read, and immediately began the study of it. I shall never forget the confidence in God that came to me, after the first two hours of careful reading of this wonderful book, with a renewed sense of love and peace. It also brought the joy of knowing that God had answered my prayers, and that this was His way of revealing the truth to me.

During the months and years that followed, the Bible teachings became clearer to me, and since then I have wakened to see the power of God and to understand in some measure the Christ-idea which was so plainly manifested in Jesus. Christian Science has taught me to rely wholly upon God for healing, and for eleven years I have used no material remedy whatever. Before I was entirely healed, sometimes the pain would seem very severe, but at these times I would take Science and Health and read a sentence or two about God. This brought light and healing, for while thinking these thoughts, even for a few moments, I have been able to get up from my bed, all sense of pain having vanished from consciousness, and in place of it I had a sweet sense of happiness, rest, and peace. At these times I was invariably alone, all material remedies having been tried in my case for so many years that those with me had become accustomed to my suffering; and the doctor, who had shown me much kindness, found that his efforts to help me were useless. He told me during his last visit that there was no hope, that I would always suffer pain, and he named the disease spinal neuralgia, which he said meant pain in every part of the body. After a short time, however, through Christian Science, that man-made law was broken, and I was completely healed, it being proved that God is the only lawgiver.

No words can ever express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for giving Christian Science to the world in her book, that all may benefit from its teachings. The years of patient and loving endurance for the sake of others, in order to bring this message of truth to the sick and suffering, must have its sure reward. I lovingly quote her own words in Science and Health: "A louder song, sweeter than has ever before reached high heaven, now rises clearer and nearer to the great heart of Christ; for the accuser is not there, and Love sends forth her primal and everlasting strain" (p. 568).
