TRIAL AND TRIUMPH
Discord, trial, and mishap drive investigation back through the course of error to its cause, and for the reason that true premise and correct process, as we well know, always beget both the assurance and the realization of harmony. In view of our instinctive dread of the false, and our intuitive recognition of the true as the only valid basis of living, it will readily appear how significant to human weal is the Christian Science teaching that in "material belief, in all its manifestations, reversed, will be found the type and representative of verities priceless, eternal, and just at hand" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 61).
Righteous endeavor carries sure reward, bountiful and sweet. Pain, disappointment, and repeated trial may long seem to be the only requital for the best intention and sincerest effort, but each experience, however bitter, is precious, since through it ignorant concepts are sure to be dissolved, a true habitation prepared for consciousness, and proper direction given to activity.
Listening to a pair of devoted robins, the chasing notes of whose evening fugue have possessed the apple-trees with a very abandon of melody, to which three or four youngsters, lately instructed in the art and freedom of robinhood, are contributing in the round, I, who know something of the family history, have no difficulty in interpreting the theme. It is telling of righteous triumph over some illusive belief "reversed" and of thanksgiving for verties "just at hand."
