I give this testimony in loving gratitude for all the good . . .
I give this testimony in loving gratitude for all the good that has come to me through Christian Science, and in love to our revered Leader who stood firm for the truth. I suffered terribly from a stomach disorder, and my back seemed to be in a dreadful condition. For years I had what the doctors called a most serious affection on the cavity of the neck. I was operated upon by one of the best surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland, and had the lump taken away, but never the pain.
Thirteen years afterward, I was ready to go through another operation. I was in extreme distress at this time, thinking the end was near, when a friend who is not a Christian Scientist advised me to try Christian Science. I did so, took treatment for three months, and was healed. I then studied "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and soon learned how to prove for myself the statement that "man has not two lives, one to be destroyed and the other to be made indestructible" (Science and Health, p. 369). I know now that my life is in God, and I gain more abundantly by walking "after the Spirit." I know of a truth that God is Love, and that He has sent us another prophet, Mrs. Eddy, to tell us that there is but one life, one Christ and one Saviour, divine Truth.
I may add that I had no faith in material remedies, even while under medical treatment, and was always looking for some one that could heal by prayer. I was raised in an orthodox church, and the minister often quoted the apostle's words, the "prayer of a righteous man availeth much." A' short time before coming to Christian Science I had begun to doubt if there was a God, although I had been raised by Christian parents who kept family worship; but one thing I never forgot to do, and that was, to say the Lord's Prayer, although I had no proof that any prayer had been answered. Such darkness in a Christian age seems dreadful, and yet there are hundreds who are waiting for a way of escape such as I have found through Christian Science. I have had to forsake a great deal, for I had to give up greed, but I can truly say, as did Paul, that I count all things "but dung, that I may win Christ." May God enlighten some honest seeking heart through this testimony. I can truly say "I know that my redeemer liveth," and "eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, ... the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."
