Christian Science came to my notice many years ago...

Christian Science came to my notice many years ago through the healing (after many months of invalidism) of a very dear member of my family. At the time of this healing I looked upon the works wrought by Christian Science as I looked upon a physician's work; it had nothing to offer me because I then needed nothing. I was physically well and satisfied with the pleasures which my family and the world gave. But as time went on my children came and had the diseases which the world believes children must have, and I occasionally turned to Science for relief.

About ten years after Christian Science came under my observation I heard rumors of something which if it were true would mean the destruction of my dearest idol. Upon hearing this rumor, I turned my face to Christian Science, for I began to desire a knowledge of God, divine Love, and that love which "suffereth long and is kind." The understanding which I obtained from turning to the light I used in endeavoring to make it a part of my life, to become one with wisdom. After many months of working in this way I heard other reports, which this time took a more tangible form. Again I looked to Science for more understanding, and the search if possible was carried on with more earnestness. This experience was repeated many times the following months, the reports of evil always being met by such an earnest looking to God as never failed to bring wisdom. Finally I saw my idol broken, shattered at my feet, but with its destruction came the sweet assurance and realization that God is Love, an ever-satisfying Love, and that God is omnipotent. With this realization I proved that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).

As I now take a retrospective view of this demonstration of God's goodness, I recognize the fact that I was never called upon during the whole experience—which occupied several years—to hear more evil than I could bear. Had I at first been asked to listen to the report which came to me last, I should have been overcome; but because I was trusting Love, evil was not uncovered until I had gained sufficient wisdom to prove that evil unreal,—unreal because it had no part in God's kingdom. I also see that while there were times when my trouble seemed more than I could bear, yet out of this experience has come the greatest blessing which a mortal can have, namely, a knowledge of Christian Science.
