Christian Science requires spiritualization of thought, a true and exact knowledge of God as the divine Mind, and man as a spiritual being. It moreover requires love for God and man to be the sole motive for undertaking the work, the one ideal being to bring the kingdom of God to earth. To attain this state of mind, which was the Mind of Jesus the Christ, may take time, a great deal of time, or it may be attained quickly. It depends on the capacity of the student to grasp spiritual things. St. Paul, it will be remembered, very quickly gained the understanding needful to preach Christ Jesus and to heal the sick.

Christian Scientists hold no brief against the medical fraternity. They cheerfully acknowledge the high motives, the philanthropy, the courageous efforts to alleviated disease and suffering, among the better class of physicians. They desire every person who wishes to employ materia medica as a healing agency to be unrestrained in his choice. They have no sneers to offer over the failures of materia medica to heal particular cases, nor have they any stones to cast at individual members of the profession for their personal failures or idiosyncrasies. They endeavor to live the golden rule in their relations to all men, knowing that only by so doing can they truly follow the Master, who taught his followers to love all men, enemies as well as friends.
