With heartfelt gratitude I wish to express my thanks to God for my healing through Christian Science. For three years I suffered from an internal complaint—which seemingly affected another internal organ. I saw several good doctors in different towns in England, had medical treatment for three years, and I cannot speak too highly of the kindness I received from these gentlemen; but I did not get healed by them. One doctor suggested an operation for me, but another said it was not needful; so I continued to spend a great deal for medical treatment, but felt well-nigh hopeless at times.

At that time I was an actress in a traveling company, and in order to be able to do my work in the evening I had to take a good deal of rest, to rise very late in the day, and if I took a walk out it was only for a short distance, often being glad to take a friend's arm before I returned. I rested until it was time to go to my work, and directly the performance was over I rested again until I went to bed. My life was an utter burden to me, and often I prayed that I might die and be rid of my tiresome body. After suffering for two years, I heard of Christian Science and was loaned a copy of Science and Health, which I did not then understand. I also read certain newspaper articles against Christian Science, and made great fun of what I imagined this Science to be. A year later, however, I heard of something that changed my thought about it, and then meeting a lady who was a Christian Scientist, I asked her to treat me. She very kindly consented, but as I was leaving that town she was obliged to give me absent treatment.

Ten days afterward I was completely healed. On the tenth morning I was running down a street, not because I was in a hurry, but for sheer joy that I could run, when I heard some one calling me. I turned and saw a friend, also an actress in the company I was then with, panting up the street after me. As I turned to meet her, her greeting was, "What on earth is the matter with you?" "Nothing," I replied. "Why?" She answered, "But you were running!" "I know I was," I said. She again exclaimed, "You ! running!" What of it?" I asked. "Well, all I know is, she retorted, "that only the other day you were glad enough of my arm to crawl up the street." I told her of my healing, but she did not seem to grasp the fact, and all that morning I caught her casting side glances at me, as if she thought me demented. That week I went for a swim, and although I had not been able to go swimming for three years, I remained in the water half an hour, swimming all the time, and experienced no fatigue or ill effects afterward.
