When I came to Christian Science it was not for physical...
When I came to Christian Science it was not for physical healing, though I was sadly in need of it. I had exhausted about all that materia medica had to offer in my search for health, and was in a serious condition both physically and mentally. A friend, who was not a Christian Scientist, but a deep student and a fine Bible scholar, told me about this teaching and then brought me some Christian Science literature and asked me to read it.
I read the text-book, Science and Health, through in a week, and when I had completed it I was so confused in thought that I knew not one sentence it contained, but from that day I never wore my glasses again. Some of the best oculists and nerve specialists in our large cities had told me I would never be well, and prophesied my total blindness if I did not discontinue my work as a teacher. The condition of my right eye was such that my nervous system was affected, and my entire left side was partially paralyzed. I had been in this condition ten years, and words are inadequate to describe the suffering I experienced with my head. I was healed of all this simply by reading Science and Health.
I had been reared under Christian teaching, but had grown so dissatisfied and unhappy that I was an agnostic and had not attended church for two years. What had been taught me in the church did not wax strong "in time of trouble," and the Bible was no comfort, as I could not understand it or apply its promises with profit. Now, with the joy, peace, comfort, contentment, and all that makes life worth living, I am finding my way in Christian Science.
