FROM OUR EXCHANGES

[The Congregationalist.]

If we no longer make sharp boundaries of time and place for sin and faith and final destiny, it is not because we make light of the effects of sin. Our modern knowledge will not suffer that, any more than the stern words of Christ. But we have come to feel that we must interpret even God's righteous anger in terms of fatherhood. The certainty of painful harvests from sinful sowing we cannot doubt; but we cannot refuse to lay strong emphasis upon the wish of God. When we refuse the higher for the lower; when we turn from wisdom to folly, refusing honor to embrace temptation, we are sinning not less against the wish than against the law of God. God's wish is for our joy. But joy is never, though happiness for the moment may be, born of evil. The harvest of God is a gathering of righteous and therefore joyful spirits. We, His children, are His care and His delight while we are growing in His likeness; and the desired and joyful harvest of God is begun already when any man by His help wins a triumph over sin.
