For a long time I have desired to express a little of the gratitude that fills my heart for the freedom which I have gained through the study of Christian Science as taught by our Leader and the world's benefactor, Mrs. Eddy. Six years ago I was bound down by all kinds of limitations, mental and physical. My last physician had told me that I would live but a few months at most. I had suffered for fifteen years from asthma and kidney trouble. My suffering from a spinal disease was also very great; while a cough and debilitated condition made every effort a burden,—in fact, I had lost all desire to live.
I was satisfied with my religion, having been a church member for thirteen years. My prayer was all the time that I might know God's will and be found ready to do it, but I believed that the suffering which was constantly with me, and had been for so many years, would remain until I was freed from the body by death.
One day my church paper contained a long article entitled, "Is Christian Science Christian?" In it Christian Science was denounced as a great fraud, imposed upon the world by Mrs. Eddy, etc. Passages were quoted from Science and Health, supposed to prove the folly of the teaching. As I had never heard of such a book, or of Mrs. Eddy, I desired to know more of this doctrine which was undergoing such severe criticism, but it was several months before I learned, through a relative whose daughter had been most wonderfully healed, that there was a Reading Room in the city where I could learn something of Christian Science. I went that same day. Two Journals were given me and I was told that "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was in all the branch libraries of the city. I got the book at once and read it through. I found that the truth it contained had been very much misrepresented in the criticism. I found that it taught a very high ideal of Christian living and it gave me a hope which I did not have before. The thought of being healed by trusting in God was very beautiful to me, yet I wanted the authority for my acceptance to come from God's Word.
