In Isaiah we find these words, "Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come ... with a recompence; He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: ... They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away." On the 12th day of August, 1902, I could not speak one word, nor had I talked for over eight years. During that time I never raised my eyes to look at anybody, or at anything. I could not read, I could not write. The next day I asked for help in Christian Science from the Christian Scientist under whose loving care I had been for the previous two years. I asked by means of a sign. She said, "If you wish me to help you, you must read this book," and she gave me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This was about nine o'clock in the morning. I read a few lines, and at three o'clock in the afternoon I said these words, "Praise 'the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me,' praise God's 'holy name. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.'"

During the first part of my illness I was under several specialists, also day and night nurses. They finally said they could do nothing more for me. I then had Christian Science treatment, but I was too ill to know anything about it. Exactly four months after the day I spoke, I wrote to Mrs. Eddy to tell her what Christian Science had done for me, and to thank her for this interpretation of the life and teachings of Christ Jesus which had made possible the fulfillment of his commandment to heal the sick, and this letter I was able to write without having previously written one word for over eight years. My gratitude to God, and to our Leader, for all that Christian Science has done for me, can only be expressed in my life. I should like now, when telling of my healing, to tell also of the great help I derive from reading the Sentinel and Journal, and from the daily study of the Lesson-Sermons, and to express my sincere gratitude for them all.
