For eighteen long, weary years I suffered with what the physicians told me was an incurable malady. According to materia medica, it was a disease of the nerve tissues of the face, which caused the most excruciating pain. My husband spent a great deal upon doctors and drugs, for we employed the best physicians, wrote to many specialists, and did whatever seemed likely to afford relief, without, however, obtaining any. Morphine was resorted to again and again, but always with the same result, nausea and increased distress; thus I escaped forming the drug habit.
After many years of this suffering, our old family doctor said the nerves of the face were simply dying and that the process would go on until I died, and that my age was against me. I was nearly eighty then. During one of the intervals between the attacks, while visiting my granddaughter in the East, I went with her to consult a Christian Science practitioner about her own case, but it did not occur to me that I could be benefited. I listened to her explanation of the Christ-healing, known to this age as Christian Science, when it suddenly dawned upon me that it might perhaps heal me of train-sickness, with which I had suffered ever since a child, and as I had the journey to Ohio before me, this seemed the need of the hour. I spoke to her about it and she said she would give me a treatment. Later on, when we began our trip, I found to my surprise that I was entirely healed of the distressing traveling discomfort and enjoyed every moment of the journey. From that day I have never had a return of the old facial trouble. It has been nearly eight years and I feel as young and strong as I ever did. I go about alone, making visits of several weeks' duration. While I find that old habits of thought seem hard to get rid of, yet I read Science and Health every day and am indeed grateful to dear Mrs. Eddy for showing us the way which Jesus taught to health and wholeness.
I also want to say that after I had been reading Science and Health about two years, an old trouble, called peritonitis, or inflammation of the bowels, made its appearance. I had suffered three weeks at two different times with it, the last time being obliged to have a nurse, and it left me in an abnormal condition which caused constant pain in the side and aggravated the life-long habit of constipation. The physician in charge stated that if I ever had another attack it would be my death, because of this disarrangement. When the trouble made its appearance I was a hundred miles from home, and during the journey I became so weakened that I had to be carried from the train to the carriage. My granddaughter and I reached our rooms and shut out the world. I seemed about to pass away, and she thought for family reasons that perhaps she should call a physician, but I said "No," so she worked on in the truth with renewed courage, and the next day I was able to walk to the hotel, two blocks away, and eat dinner with some friends. With this healing the pain in the side disappeared, and also the constipation. I do not see how any one could doubt that Christian Science is the truth.
