I did not think when I used to throw aside the papers...

I did not think when I used to throw aside the papers with the testimonies that my wife gave me to read and say they were a pack of lies and fairy tales and I not believe a word of them, that I would some day be adding my testimony to the great work that our Leader has done for us and mankind. I do not suppose any one ever fought against Science harder than I did.

My wife had been a great sufferer and our doctor had ordered me to take her to the mountains where we heard of Christian Science through the wife of the hotel keeper. Up to that time we were nothing more than atheists without God or hope in the world. When she told me she had put herself in the hands of a Christian Science practitioner I thought she had gone crazy, and told her so. At the start she had very little confidence in it herself, but as the truth dawned upon her, she asked me to stop my ridicule, as she had found what she had not found in any other creed that she had investigated, — a loving God.

As her bodily suffering left, and knowing her to be a woman of sound judgment, I thought perhaps there was something in it after all, but while I stopped ridiculing it on her account, I would not give in that it was anything but a delusion and a snare. As she became more interested in the work and I saw the great improvement in her health and that she had stopped all drugs, I told her she could treat me, not believing any good would come from it, as I was a terrible sufferer from constipation and rheumatism. My friends said I was a walking patent medicine shop, as I was always taking everything new that I saw advertised. I had always been a hard drinker, and when excited in business, a very profane man. As the treatment went on and I began to be better physically, the spiritual commenced to manifest itself. I realized what a terrible thing profanity was and I quit it. I realized what a terrible thing profanity was and I quit it. I stood with a glass of whiskey in my hand ready to drink it, and I realized how wrong it was. I asked my if she knew what I was going to do with it, and she replied, "Drink it." I told her as I threw it in the wash basin, "No; I will never drink a drop of liquor again," and by the grace of God I have not, and that was three years ago. Now I want to return thanks to God, and to our Leader for Christian Science, and for the great blessings it has brought me and mine.
