Christian Science was first presented to me in England. The friend who called my attention to the subject was a bright, intellectual American girl, whose opinion I was bound to respect and consider. I had for several years been troubled with what was called an hereditary disease, but in talking of the Science, the healing did not appeal to me particularly, although the subject itself I found new and interesting.

On returning to the United States the following autumn I visited this friend in the far West, and it was while there that I permitted her mother, who was a practitioner, to treat me in Christian Science. For many weeks I had been suffering from fatigue and anxiety, which no doubt aggravated the physical condition. After some time I graciously allowed the healer to treat me. Only those who have experienced quick healing can appreciate my surprise and pleasure at suddenly finding myself a well woman. It took me six months to believe it, but as I experienced no return of my old trouble it sealed my conviction that I had indeed been healed by something truly wonderful. I can never express my mental condition during this period. Everything was changed, everything was different,—the flowers, the trees, nature itself had a new promise. The world was full of joy and I was inexpressibly happy.

An amusing incident happened at this time. I asked my friend, who had returned to Boston, to send me some Christian Science literature, as I was eager to begin an investigation for myself, but when twenty dollars' worth of small black books tumbled out of an express package, sent C. O. D., I must say that I had a slight sense that I was getting Christian Science in large doses. It has proved, however, to be the best investment I ever made. I might also add that my friend knew my requirements and included a Bible in the collection.
