Three Penitents

One tarried by the gateway
To listen for the call;
One stood within the portal
To chide a faith so small;

Another, standing at the chancel,
Bowed low his head to pray:
"I thank Thee, oh, my Father,
I'm not so weak as they."

The gates of Heaven swung open—
Two entered with the throng
And marveled that their brother
Remained on earth so long.
