Christian Science cannot produce Evil

The Manchester (N. H.) Union

Editor of The Union.

A recent edition of your paper, The Union, contained an article entitled, "Reversible Christian Science." The discussion, of which the article purported to be a report, aimed to prove the theory that if Christian Science can cure disease, it can also cause disease.

This theory finds no support in Scripture and none in the teachings and practice of Christian Science. The theory is false that the same power by which good is accomplished may be reversed and used for evil purposes. This belief is a part of the prevalling materialism which declares that God—the supreme power that created and governs the universe—is both positive and negative, good and evil. If prayer to God avails in the healing of sickness, why may not prayer to God be employed by the evil-minded to cause sickness? Or, to speak definitely, if prayer heals the drunkard, why may not prayer be employed to create drunkards? This is the problem which perplexes our good friend, and he declares that nothing can convince him to the contrary; that the power which can heal can be also used to make sick. He admits that Christian Science does heal, but is afraid that evil may come of it. Is he not similarly afraid that the prayers and sermons that are offered in our churches may be reversed by some one hearing them, and made a power for evil?
