Reply to Rev. Dr. Waterman

The Gazette

Editor Gazette: — Your issue of February 18, gives a column and a half of space to an abstract of a sermon preached last Sunday evening in your city by Dr. W. A. Waterman, in the course of which he is reported to have made an attack upon Christian Science on the ground that it is pantheistic. If I shall be able to show herein that such a charge is a misconception on the part of Dr. Waterman, and that it entirely misrepresents the Christian Science doctrine, I take it for granted that, as a Christian gentleman, he will welcome the correction of his unjust censure and that you will not decline to place such correction, suitably and decorously made, before your readers.

Your abstract of his sermon quotes Dr. Waterman as follows: —

"Mrs. Eddy's system is but little more, philosophically speaking, than a hazy, confused rehash of the religion of India, — pantheism in a crude, illogical form."
