When Christian Science first came to us, the members of our family were in the following condition. My wife in bed absolutely helpless with chronic rheumatism together with numerous other ills unnecessary to state here. Our daughter suffering with weak lungs, she having been afflicated seven different times with what materia medica calls pneumonia and congestion of the lungs. Two of our boys were suffering from hereditary dyspepsia and the third boy was afflicted with eczema, while I seemed to be very much handicapped with a severe case of chronic dyspepsia or indigestion, to the extent that I frequently was taken home in a carriage through having fainted while at work in my office.

Of course under these conditions was the necessity of having a samll apothecary shop at home which together with the daily consumption of drugs, took about one third of my income to keep up. Add to this the expense of providing for an appetite for smoking and chewing tobacco and a social habit of imbibing intoxicating beverages to an unsafe degree, and it will be seen what it cost me to support unqualified error, aside from the necessaries of life.

It is about eight years since the glad tidings reached our home, and during that time there has been no medicine used by any member of our family except by the writer. I did not take to the Science for a number of years, but I did read the books occasionally and of course the inevitable occurred. It has been four years since I have smoked or chewed tobacco or drank any kind of intoxicating liquor, and the same length of time since I have resorted to any other than Christian Science treatment for claims of disease. When I first took up the study of Science I weighed one hundred and ten pounds, and I now weigh one hundred and forty-two pounds. I am better physically, morally, and in every other way. The tobacco and liquor habit has been so thoroughly destroyed that I not only have no desire for them, but have a sense of pity for any one whom I see using them.
