The New Rest
Some six years ago, when the discords of material existence were closing about me, at times almost strangling any desire I might have to live, a good friend advised me to buy Science and Health, which I did. Soon a new conception of life began forming in my thought and manifesting itself from day to day. I was extremely fond of dancing, but ere long, I found more happiness in reading Science and Health than attending balls; the theatre lost its attraction, and the taste for wine was destroyed. My old friends and my family were not in sympathy with me. I passed through a period of loneliness that was akin to disease, until I gained enough understanding to meet it, and to feel the presence of the Comforter. Many sins are left behind, many are still to overcome. As I journey onward, at times the clear glow of Truth lighting my pathway, at times the dark shadows of mortal thought falling upon me, I have this abiding faith: "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers. they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour." Even when all seems dark, I can sing praises, because of the hope within me. In this thought I find a new rest.
