Christian Science and Universalism

In our article under the above heading in last week's Sentinel we referred to Dr. Laing's criticism on the "Science" side of Christian Science, and thus concluded our article:—

"His criticism is chiefly that her system is deductive instead of inductive, which, he says, is contrary to the scientific method and is the reason why students of science have had so much difficulty in understanding Mrs. Eddy's writings. This criticism, though fair and kindly in its terms, involves so much that we cannot consider it now for want of time and space. We shall endeavor to make it the subject of another article. Meantime, we submit to our friend whether, after all, it is not truly Scientific to lay the premises in Creation and deduce the created therefrom; in Spirit and deduce the phenomena of matter therefrom; in God and deduce the universe and man therefrom, rather than the reverse. This is what Mrs. Eddy does, and herein, as the students of her system think, she has sounded the very key-note of the true method of Scientific reasoning. Surely it was the method of the Bible writers, and the Bible is the Scientific Book of the world. It was Jesus' method, and he was the Scientist of the world."

We shall now briefly endeavor to meet some of the objections urged by Dr. Laing. We re-quote his remark that "Mrs. Eddy's form of religious belief, as distinguished from science, is simple and of easy application. But of the science feature as much cannot be said." Dr. Laing then proceeds:—
