I have, for a long time, wished to tell of the gratitude I feel for what Christian Science has done for me, in bringing me out of a miserable state of darkness, and doubt, and fear of God, into peace, and happiness, and a feeling of safety which is beautiful, and which grows always more certain and satisfying.

I was brought up in the Orthodox Protestant Church, but was never satisfied, for it explained nothing, and seemed like a closed door,—closed by death,—and for some years before hearing of Christian Science, I had begun to doubt the truth of the Bible because I could not see that the promises were kept. This made me very unhappy.

I thought, at one time, that I understood the atonement according to the teaching of the church, and longed to die that I might get to heaven at once and be safe and happy forever in God's presence, it seemed so simple and beautiful. But, after many years of experience, I came to see that this did not agree with the teaching that we must work out our own salvation; also that every sin worked out its own punishment, so that it was certainly not forgiven in the way usually taught, and that to believe in that kind of forgiveness led to continuing in sin that grace might abound. It was very puzzling.
