Thankfulness for the Three-fold Blessings

I feel it not only a duty but a privilege to testify to the benefits that have come to me and my family, both physically and spiritually, from the teachings of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." For several years I had been subject to chills about every two months, and would be obliged to remain in bed for two or three days and take quinine or some other medicine to produce a perspiration. About two years ago while in Providence, R. I., I met several Scientists, and after having a talk about Science I bought Science and Health, with the agreement that I could return it at any time within a year and the money would be refunded. But I have had it nearly two years, and it is becoming more and more valuable to me each day; I shall never part with it, as I consider it one of the best investments I ever made.

At first I carried the book with me and read it considerably, but did not receive any benefit, as I could not understand it. In October, 1899, I contracted a severe cold and came home expecting to be there for two or three days, but was in bed for two months. After I recovered sufficiently to be around, I did not seem to regain my former health. This condition lasted until July, 1900. I was doctoring all the while, but to no effect.

July 18 a gentleman called to see me on business, and in the course of conversation told me what Christian Science had done for him. The word thus fitly spoken brought forth fruit in three days, as on the 21st I stopped smoking, which habit I had followed faithfully for thirty years, smoking from five to seven cigars daily. On the morning of July 22 I stopped taking medicine (at that time I was taking four different kinds three times a day). I had come to the point where I had lost all faith in drugs, and made up my mind that mine was a hopeless case. This same day I had a chill. I said to my wife, "Now, this would be a good time to try that Christian Science." By the way, she had always opposed it until this day, when she, too, was willing to try anything to better my condition. She telephoned to several Scientists, and at last the First Reader in First Church of Christ, Scientist, here, answered the telephone and said that she would come or send some one to treat me. This was about three o'clock in the afternoon. I was determined not to give up and go to bed, and did not until eight o'clock, and as there had come up a very severe rain storm I thought the healer would not come. But she did come about nine o'clock and treated me, and when she left she said she would send some one to see me on the following day, which was Sunday.
