No Attempt to Affect China

Boston Herald

A special despatch from Chicago in the Herald of last evening stated that the Christian Scientists of that city were united in an effort to influence events and shape destinies in China by concentrating their mental powers upon that object. Mrs. Merwin H. Conger, the wife of the United States minister at Pekin, is said to be a believer in Christian Science, and that fact draws to the family the especial sympathies of their Chicago co-religionists.

The despatch further stated that the Christian Scientists throughout the country had joined in the attempt to rescue the imperilled Christians in Pekin, and that there is a feeling among the faithful that success is sure, and that the legations, together with the missionaries, will be later heard from in a place of safety.

Judge S. J. Hanna, First Reader of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, was seen at his home by a reporter for the Herald last night, and asked if it were true that Christian Scientists throughout the world are directing their mental forces toward Pekin, with the expectation of saving the besieged foreigners there.
