How I Became a Christian Scientist

Walking along Massachusetts Avenue, in Boston, one week-day, my attention was attracted by hearing the chimes from a church on Falmouth Street. I went to the church, walked around it, admiring the beautiful windows, and thought, "I will go into this church next Sunday." Sunday came but something prevented and I did not attend the services until a year later.

One Friday in May, 1898, found me at the evening service in the Mother Church. I well remember the night. I was very much surprised to see the church crowded, it being so warm, and at, as I then supposed, a prayermeeting. Seeing a friend, I inquired if it were a special meeting, and he replied, "No, sometimes they have larger gatherings than this." I then thought, "There must be something here that other churches do not have."

After the preliminary services, the First Reader said that the meeting was open for remarks and testimonies. As I had no idea whatever of what was to follow, I was somewhat surprised to hear the testimony of a young man who had been healed in six weeks of consumption in its last stages, by reading the text-book, Science and Health. Others spoke of healing and of the great help that God Good had been to them.
