An Interesting Item

A correspondent , who is an earnest Christian Scientist, writes us an interesting account of a conversation she recently had with the rector of prominent Episcopal church in an important city, the substance of which was that at a convention soon to be held, which was to be composed of the brightest minds in that denomination of both England and America, they were to devote one whole day to exposing the error contained in Christian Science, or to quote the words of the rector, "they are preparing a lash to whip the Christian Scientists" of his city. He further said that each Wednesday evening one of their prayers was that God might convert all who were under the delusion of Christian Science.

Our correspondent further says that this minister was kind and courteous in every way. We submit this bit of information for the interest it may have for Christian Scientists, and with only the utmost good feeling toward our friend who charges us with delusion. We cannot, however, refrain from querying a little by the way.

Our friend must surely know that Christian Scientists are not bad people. He must know that they are a moral people, a law-abiding people; that they are sincere and earnest students of the Bible; that they are a prayerful people. He must know that, right in his own city as well as elsewhere, Christian Scientists have healed many sick people, and are constantly healing many; that they have been instrumental in assuaging the sorrow of many and thereby making them happier, and that they are daily engaged in that kind of work; that they have been the means of redeeming many of their friends and fellow-citizens from bad habits, such as drinking intoxicating liquors, inebriety, the filthy tobacco habit, and sins of a grosser kind; that through their ministrations the moral and material conditions of thousands have been improved; that many of his fellow-beings have been made better, healthier, happier, and holier in every way. He will find all this and much more to be true if he will make honest inquiry to that end.
