Convinced by Reading Science and Health
I would like to add my testimony to that of the thousands of my brother and sister Scientists as to the wonderful light and illumination which has come to me through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I did not come into Christian Science through the door of physical healing as many have, but after trying for many years to live a good life in the old way, trying to relieve the sick and suffering, also to find rest for my own soul, I at last became discouraged and disheartened. Not finding faith sufficient for these things, I stood outside the gate for a while, not taking any special pleasure in my church relations or work. I was asked to read Science and Health by one of my own family, who had found its green pastures and still waters, and who said to me, "I think, now, you are ready to read this book and understand it, and I know it will comfort you as nothing else can."
At first, when told of its wonderful healing power and that it was really the Christ-healing, like Thomas, I could not believe until I had read the "little book" for myself. At the first reading, I saw the glorious interpretation of the old truths I had been trying to practise without understanding, and was lifted up out of care and sorrow, as never before.
Then my earnest desire was for class teaching at once, and to enter my Lord's vineyard anew. It was such joyful news to me to knew it possible to heal the sick as Jesus did, I could lose no time in getting the whole armor on ready for work. In March, 1897, I had the privilege of class instruction from one of our dear Mother's loyal students, and since that time, have been "proving the doctrine all divine" by casting out evil and healing the sick according to the command of the Master. The signs following have been marvelous to human sense in some instances, and the work glorious and uplifting. During this experience I have seen the hopeless invalid raised to health and happiness, and the sinful reclaimed to the glory of God. I have seen chronic stomach trouble, nervous prostration, epilepsy, insanity, tic douloureux, and like beliefs of the human mind yield to the touch of Truth and vanish into their native nothingness. I have seen the lame walk, the blind see, and have heard the dumb speak, after weeks of speechlessness, for all of which do I give thanks to divine Love who has so graciously led me into this way of light and understanding, through the labor of love of His servant, our beloved Mother in Israel, Mary Baker Eddy—Violetta M. Doane, Fenton, Mich.
