Christian Science versus Materia Medica
About two months ago the typhoid fever made its appearance. For about a week I gave myself treatment, but it did not yield. Having had a siege of the same trouble nine years ago, and remembering what I seemed to go through at that time, the fear was too great for me, and I asked for assistance from one who has helped me over many rough places. In another week the fever had entirely disappeared.
I would like to illustrate the difference between treatment by materia medica and Christian Science. In the first case of nine years ago a physician was employed. I was in the hospital four weeks, and after leaving there it was more than a month before I was able to return to my work. In the second case, in which Christian Science was the only means of help resorted to, I was absent but half a day from my business, and when the fever was destroyed the bad effects, such as extreme weakness, disappeared also.
I am also truly grateful for what Truth has done for me in destroying the tobacco and other bad habits. My progress has been very slow, and the temptation has come many times to give up Christian Science, but Peter's answer to the Master, "Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life," has always cleared the mists away. And Paul says, "Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." Also our dear Leader, the Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy, has said, "Be active, and, however slow, thy success is sure" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 340).
