Christian Science Ideas
Newburyport (Mass.) News
To the Editor of the News:—In a recent issue, you give a report of a criticism on Christian Science by Rev. C. S. Holton. Will you kindly give space in your paper for this correction.
As Christian Scientists we cheerfully concede to all men the peaceful and undisturbed privilege of their honest opinions, and we will not even criticise a religious body which cannot conscientiously grant letters to the Church of Christ, Scientist, but will patiently wait to be better understood. We do not believe that our friends would intentionally misrepresent us, yet it is true that we are to a great extent misunderstood and therefore misjudged and misstated. The most careful investigation on the part of some who are vitally interested in this method has proved that a very large per cent of the past reports of fatalities under Christian Science treatment, are without foundation, while others are greatly exaggerated. It is also true that a much smaller per cent of patients die under Christian Science treatment than under the treatment of any other system.
It is stated by our critic that "Christian Science has disturbed many a Christian home, and been forced upon helpless children." We would ask, why have not Christian Scientists an equal right with others to choose a remedy for their children, since they have proved to their positive satisfaction that children as well as adults are more safe under Christian Science treatment than under any other method of curing the sick which they have experienced. Who is better able to judge in a matter of this kind than the Christian Scientist himself, who has based his decision upon years of personal experience, and observation?
