Communion Thoughts
It is well for us to think of the significance of this word Communion. To commune is to be in unity, or to be at one. In truly communing with God we are at one with Him. If we are at one with God, we are at one with each other; and if we are at one with each other, we are at one with God. These two are one. Oneness with eternal Good is oneness with every idea or reflection of eternal Good. This is spiritual union, or union in Spirit.
In so far as Communion services tend to lead us toward and into a better conception of our oneness with God, Good, in its real and eternal relation, they are helpful. Let us know, then, that God, as eternal Good, is our divine Principle; that this union is eternal, therefore, indestructible and inseparable.
This union is a glorious one. Think of an eternal oneness with eternal Good, and Good as infinite Love! This is the oneness whereof Jesus spake in that prayer of ineffable tenderness recorded by John:—
