Our Baptism

The account of Jesus' appearance upon this earth as given in the Gospel of Saint Mark is unlike that of the other gospels in that it makes no mention of his material birth. This Gospel somewhat abruptly begins thus: "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." Then follow references to John the Baptist, wherein he foretells the coming of one mightier than he, the latchet of whose shoes he was not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

The Baptist declared that while he had baptized with water, he who should come would baptize with the Holy Ghost.

Then follows the simple announcement of Jesus' appearance: "And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee." Jesus then partook of John's baptism. No sooner had he been thus baptized, than the Spirit drove him into the wilderness, and there his forty days' temptation by Satan ensued, and he was with the wild beasts.
