The Lectures

The people of Pipestone have never had the opportunity of listening to a finer lecture than that delivered by Hon. W. G. Ewing, of Chicago, at the Ferris Grand Thursday evening, August 24th, on the subject of Christian Science. There was a good sized audience present, and all gave the closest attention to the distinguished speaker. Mr. Ewing is an eloquent speaker, and logical, clear, and broad-minded in his remarks. Although he spoke over an hour and a half, the time was much too short to handle his subject from every point. Mr. Ewing has been for years Judge of the Superior Court of Chicago, and recently declined reappointment to accept a position as a member of the Board of Lecturers of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Boston. The lecture will give an onward lift to the Christian Science society of this city. The introductory address was delivered by Miss Florence Wilson.—Pipestone Star.

The introductory address was as follows:—

In the year 1866, Mary Baker G. Eddy discovered the Science of metaphysical healing, and named it Christian Science. Possessing a mind of wonderful brilliancy, yet overwhelmed with a keen sense of the suffering imposed by mortal beliefs, she had sought relief from earth's sorrows in a profound study of the Bible, and after years of devotion to her mighty task she gave to the world, not a new religion, but a clearer comprehension and understanding of the old one,—the religion of Jesus the Christ.
