I have heard it said that if Christian Scientists have power to heal sickness as they claim, it naturally follows that they have power to produce sickness as well. Is this true?—An Inquirer.

It would be no more unreasonable or unjust to say that the prayers of the Christian which convert the sinner could also cause the saint to fall from his steadfastness. One who understood in the least degree the Principle and practice of Christian Science could not fail to see that it is utterly impossible for one, when governed by divine Mind, to cause sickness or sin. Nothing less than the healing influence of Truth and Love is Christian Science practice.

It is sometimes claimed that animal magnetism or hypnotism can heal sickness. It is also claimed that a reversal of the mental process which is supposed to heal, can and does make sick. For instance, it is claimed that if a hypnotist suggests to his subject that he does not suffer from a particular ailment, the subject will find when the spell is broken, that the suffering has disappeared, while to suggest to the subject that he does suffer would produce the opposite result.
