Fear Illustrated

I realize, since coming into the understanding of Truth, how much discord the thought of fear can bring to our consciousness. The incident which I am about to relate might not be credited by physicians were it not for the fact that it transpired long before I had any idea of what Christian Science was, and in my ignorance persecuted the faithful ones, as did Paul, in a blind belief that I was doing the will of God.

I had been educated to think that life insurance was the proper thing for every young man to have. After making a survey of the many propositions submitted to me, I selected a company of unquestioned integrity and met its medical examiner by appointment. After the examination he informed me that he could not possibly recommend me, as the action of my heart was imperfect. I never dreamed of such a conclusion and questioned him most carefully.

In my college days I had been used to all kinds of outdoor sports, and in truth felt quite proud of the fact that I stood at the head of my class of one hundred and fifteen members in physical development. I had heard some one tell of cardiac strains, and volunteered the suggestion that in my football days I must have overdone. The doctor coincided with me and I learned before leaving that I might drop off almost any time.
