What is it to Obey?
The thought of obedience or how to obey is a subject frequently presented to every one coming into an understanding of Christian Science. In the November, 1899, number of the Christian Science Journal, in the Editor's Table, we read, "To honor is to obey." This led out into a train of thought after this manner: If we obey God we must honor the source through which the supply from God is furnished us. While criticising and finding fault with those in authority over us, error is blinding us to the benefit to be derived from our Sunday sermons, and from the reading of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Then how necessary to honor and obey each channel for good; for are we not told that every good gift is from God. (James, 1 : 17.) Some tell us we must look beyond personality to God; true enough, and we must begin at the beginning and overcome personal sense in ourselves first. In the twelfth chapter of Numbers we find graphically portrayed the account of suffering endured by both Miriam and Aaron because they said, "Hath the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us?" and we find that they both had to come to the place where they were willing to honor and obey even Moses, for he had indeed been honored by God. And what follows this humbling of Miriam's pride? She is healed; and it is the same to-day, for God's law changeth not.
