Eye on the world: Man is selfless, not selfish

In “With big growth for the sharing economy, has it become selfish? The Christian Science Monitor points out that as much as “the rising generation wants to be part of something more than just making money,” the initial idealism fueling the “sharing economy” is waning in the face of a selfish, “not-as-noble side”—for instance, making personal profit off of public assets such as parking spaces.

“To build on selfishness is to build on sand.” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 298 )

“Meekness, selflessness, and love are the paths of His testimony and the footsteps of His flock.” (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 17 )

“Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power.” (Science and Health, p. 192 )

Related articles from The Christian Science Journal and Christian Science Sentinel:

In “Defeating selfishness”: “God’s will perpetuates universal blessing. His giving is individual and impartial, and He is the only giver; therefore it is impossible for anyone to gain any enduring good at the expense of or to the exclusion of others. Jesus proved that man’s spiritual individuality is the direct antithesis of self-promoting egotism.” And, “... because God, good, is All-in-all, selfishness has had no past history of cause and effect. So our course need not be misshapen, nor our hopes blighted, by past mistakes—our own or others’…. Love reveals the eternal supremacy of infinite good, where unselfishness always wins.”

In “Unselfed Service”: “... looking to Principle, to divine Love, for guidance in every thought, word, and deed not only protects one from mistaken service, but also opens the way to serving in the highest possible manner... it also shows how one may at all times so have the love of God and his fellowman in his heart that each right act performed, each loving thought held, each true word spoken, shall go forth to bless the whole world. Then as we lay hold of that love which renounces self-will, self-love, self-justification,—as we replace the beliefs in a material selfhood with love for and faith in God,—we shall rise to the unselfed service which reflects continual good to our fellowmen.”
