Eye on the world: Lawlessness does not rule man

In “Doves of peace give way to gunfire on anniversary of Michael Brown's death,” The Christian Science Monitor reports, “What started as a day of nonviolent demonstrations to commemorate one year since the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., turned ugly in the face of looting and gunfire,” when some agitators began shooting, assaulting, and robbing.

Ideas on this subject:

From the Bible:

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory.” (Philippians 2:3 )

From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

“The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never be won.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 61 )

“Thou to whose power our hope we give,
       Free us from human strife.
Fed by Thy love divine we live,
For Love alone is Life.” (Poems, p. 7 )

"The Principle of all power is God, and God is Love. Whatever brings into human thought or action an element opposed to Love, is never requisite, never a necessity, and is not sanctioned by the law of God, the law of Love." (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 278–279 )

"God’s law reaches and destroys evil by virtue of the allness of God." (No and Yes, p. 30 )

Related articles from the Christian Science Sentinel:

In “Negative impulses can be overcome”: “Understanding man's true being, his genuine selfhood as spiritual and perfect, we can neutralize evil in human thought and thus prove futile the carnal mind's attempt to rule mankind.” And, “In his true nature, man forever reflects the qualities of divine Love's caring and cherishing…. Man's spiritual identity, his real being, is conscious only of the divine qualities of God in man. Therefore a belief of the transference of evil thoughts does not touch the real man or influence him adversely. Hence through prayer, negative impulses can be faced fearlessly and overcome, and man's true nature can be demonstrated.”

In “Overcoming lawlessness”: “Unrest, riots, and crime have their roots in animality—selfishness, fear, hate, lust. If we are to overcome evil, we must love good…. How much do we allow animality to creep into our thinking, perhaps in small ways? How much are we contributing to the inhumanity and insubordination that is rife in the world today? Even the least amount is too much.” And, “In the degree that we rule lawlessness out of our own thinking we help to rule it out of the world.”
