Eye on the world: Giving is natural

In “After another China disaster, giving again in spotlightThe Christian Science Monitor observes that although “China ranks near the bottom on a world giving index,” recent explosions in the city of Tianjin resulted in marked generosity from citizens and groups. The Monitor notes that despite the Communist Party’s concerns about charities that might challenge its leadership, “Giving comes from the heart, making it difficult for the party to either encourage or control…. the trend looks good for more giving in China.”

Ideas on this subject:

From the Bible:

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” (II Corinthians 9:7 )

From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

“The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another’s good.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 518 )

“God does not reward benevolence and love with penalties; ….” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 199 )

“Goodness and benevolence never tire. They maintain themselves and others and never stop from exhaustion. He who is afraid of being too generous has lost the power of being magnanimous. The best man or woman is the most unselfed.” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 165 )

We welcome benevolence into our heart; we live it, because this giving—this expressing of divine Love—is so completely natural to who we really are.”
