Assets and liabilities: my "spiritual budget"

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Let me see now … I owe rent, utilities, my car payment and related maintenance costs to commute, and insurance for my car, health, and life. I need to eat, maintain my personal hygiene, and have a professional wardrobe. I need to put money away into my retirement account and save for a rainy day. Is that everything? Oh, what about that school loan which I took out to help me earn a degree and benefit my career? And I can’t forget my credit card statements, which include furniture and products that I needed to buy to set up housekeeping.

Well, I think that’s it. Oh, except for the incidentals, like eating out, which come up daily or monthly and which also must be put into the budget. (Budget, what budget?)

What are our assets and liabilities, really? Are they holdings that we gather and expenditures that life throws at us, or does the answer go deeper into our thinking?
